CATIA V5 or 3DEXPERIENCE on the Cloud: Which Is the Better Way to Work?

      When a team chooses CATIA, one of the first questions is which edition to use: CATIA V5 or 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA. They share the same design tools, but they handle data, licensing, and automation in different ways, and thle choice affects how your team works for years. 

      This article compares the two editions in plain terms. It explains what each one is, where each one fits, and how to decide between them. It then covers how you can run either edition on the cloud through managed Cloud VDI, so the edition you pick is not limited by the hardware on your desk. 

      What Is CATIA V5? 

      CATIA V5 is a desktop application that works with files. Your work is saved as separate files on a local drive or a network share. Parts are CATPart files, assemblies are CATProduct files, and drawings are CATDrawing files. To open an assembly, CATIA has to find and load every file it references, so file location and network speed matter. 

      Licensing works in one of two ways. A nodelock license is tied to one machine. Network licensing uses a Dassault Systèmes License Server, or DSLS, which gives out seats to users as they open CATIA. The usual V5 model is a perpetual license with annual maintenance, though rental is also available. 

      Most mature V5 setups have a lot of work built around them. Teams use VBScript and VBA macros for repeat tasks, the CAA V5 interface for deeper customization, and Knowledge ware rules, design tables, catalogs, and title blocks for their standards. This is often the main reason a team stays on V5. 

      CATIA V5 is not a data management system by itself. Teams add ENOVIA, SmarTeam, or another product data management tool to handle revisions and check-in and check-out. Without one, files are managed by folder, which is how work gets overwritten and links get broken. 

      CATIA V5 is still sold and supported, and the current release is V5-6R2026. It remains widely used across automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipment, which is one reason many suppliers continue to standardize it. 

      What Is 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA? 

      3DEXPERIENCE CATIA puts the same design tools on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The main change is how data is stored. There are no separate CATPart files to manage. Design data is stored in the platform database, with product lifecycle management built in through ENOVIA. Revisions, states, and relationships are handled inside the platform instead of through file names. When you save, your work goes to the database, not to a file in a folder. 

      The platform runs in one of two ways. On-premise means it runs on your own servers. On-cloud means Dassault Systèmes hosts it in their data centers as a subscription. Either way, the main design apps still install and run on a certified Windows machine. Some lighter roles run in a browser, but the full design tools are a local install. This is worth remembering when people say 3DEXPERIENCE is fully cloud based. 

      Automation also works differently. The platform uses Enterprise Knowledge Language, and the current release adds a no-code Visual Scripting tool for building algorithms. V5 VBA and CAA macros do not usually move across as they are. They need to be rebuilt, and this is often the biggest cost of changing editions. 

      This is also where Dassault Systèmes is adding new capability. In July 2026, it made LEO, its Virtual Companion for complex engineering, available on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, part of a wider move into AI-assisted design and Virtual Twin technology in the R2026x release. None of this reaches CATIA V5, which continues to receive maintenance releases instead. 

      Comparing CATIA V5 and 3DEXPERIENCE 

      How your data is stored and managed 

      V5 gives you direct control of files, and the file format is one the whole supply chain can read. The trade-off is that you manage that data yourself or with a separate PDM. 3DEXPERIENCE handles data management inside the tool, so revisions and access are controlled centrally. If you already run a good PDM with V5, the difference is small. If you manage V5 with folders today, the built-in approach is a real improvement. 

      Licensing and cost 

      V5 is usually a perpetual license with maintenance, which you buy and own, served by nodelock or DSLS. 3DEXPERIENCE is a subscription, with roles assigned to users and managed centrally. Neither is always cheaper. It depends on how steady your seat count is and how your finance team prefers to buy. 

      Your existing macros and methods 

      If your team depends on years of V5 macros, CAA applications, catalogs, and drawing standards, moving to 3DEXPERIENCE means rebuilding that work in the new tools. For a team with a lot of customization, this cost can be larger than everything else and keep them on V5 for years. 

      Collaboration and worksharing 

      3DEXPERIENCE is built around shared data, so several users can work on the same objects, with dashboards and built-in modeling and simulation. V5 reaches similar coordination through ENOVIA or another PLM tool. This is separate from where CATIA runs. A cloud desktop gives CATIA a place to run, but the worksharing itself still comes from your PLM tool. 

      Interface and training 

      V5 uses toolbars that long-time users know well, but they are spread across many menus. 3DEXPERIENCE has a more consolidated interface. If you switch, plan for training time, not just a software change. 

      Client and supply-chain requirements 

      For many suppliers, the customer decides. Aerospace and automotive OEMs often require an exact CATIA release so data stays compatible. If your customer works in a certain V5 release, matching it usually matters more than your own preference. 

      Future development 

      If you want AI-assisted workflows, browser-based roles, and generative design, those are on 3DEXPERIENCE. If you want a stable, known setup that your customers and your macros already rely on, CATIA V5 is still supported. 

      The editions also differ in how they are deployed. CATIA V5 is a desktop application. 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA is available both as an on-premise solution and as a cloud-based one, so the platform and its data can sit on your own servers or in Dassault’s cloud. 

      Both Editions Need a Certified GPU 

      CATIA V5 and the 3DEXPERIENCE design apps have the same hardware needs. Both are Windows applications that use the graphics card to draw models, so both need a professional GPU, validated drivers, a strong CPU, and plenty of memory. Dassault Systèmes lists certified configurations for both 3DEXPERIENCE and V5, and now requires Windows 11 for CATIA after Windows 10 support ended. 

      Choosing 3DEXPERIENCE does not remove this need. The browser roles run on light devices, but the full design work still needs certified hardware behind it, the same as V5. 

      That hardware does not have to be a physical machine on a desk. It can be a GPU-powered virtual desktop in a data center, sent to whatever device the engineer already uses. Dassault Systemes supports this and publishes certified configurations for virtual desktop infrastructure, so cloud-hosted VDI is an approved way to run either edition, not a workaround.

      Running Either Edition on Managed Cloud VDI

      The main advantage of managed Cloud VDI is performance. Each engineer gets a GPU-accelerated virtual desktop that runs CATIA at full workstation speed, on whatever device they already use, with no workstation to buy or maintain 

      Performance depends on your internet connection, so a weak or high-latency link will show. For most broadband and office connections, this is not a problem, but it is worth checking first. 

      Data Security 

      For engineering firms, design files are among their most valuable assets. A cloud-hosted VDI desktop is often more secure than a local one. 

      CATIA data never sits on the local device. It stays in the data center, and only an encrypted screen image reaches the user. If a laptop is lost or stolen, no design data goes with it. Administrators can also block local downloads, clipboard transfers, USB redirection, and printing to keep data inside the managed environment. 

      The data centers behind the service maintain recognized security and compliance standards, with continuous monitoring, controlled physical access, and surveillance.       Where CATIA runs is a separate decision, and it applies either way. Both editions need certified GPU hardware, and managed Cloud VDI provides that for either one, on any device, with no hardware to buy or maintain.
