CATIA on Mac: The Options for Mechanical Engineers in 2026

      CATIA runs on Windows. There is no Mac version of the software, and Dassault Systèmes does not offer one. If you are a mechanical engineer working on a MacBook or an iMac, and your part design, assemblies, and surfacing all live in CATIA, you have hit a real compatibility gap.

      That gap has widened. Apple’s latest Macs, built on the M5 series of chips, are the most capable laptops the company has shipped. None of them run CATIA natively, and the one method that used to bridge Windows software and Mac hardware is gone.

      Why Does CATIA Not Run on macOS?

      CATIA is a Windows application. Both CATIA V5 and 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA are built for 64-bit Windows, and the design applications install only on Windows. Its 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA guidance for students confirms that the software will not run on a virtual machine or on macOS, and requires a certified Windows machine.

      On a Mac, you can use the browser-based 3DEXPERIENCE collaboration and review tools, but the full SOLIDWORKS 3D design applications still need Windows.

      The hardware requirements add a second layer to the limitation. CATIA depends on a certified professional graphics card, a high-performance CPU with strong single-thread performance, and a large amount of RAM. Dassault publishes a certified hardware and software configuration list and officially supports CATIA only on validated workstation-class setups with certified drivers and supported hardware combinations.

      A general-purpose laptop, whether it is a Mac or a standard consumer Windows laptop, usually does not meet that certification requirement for production CATIA workloads.

      Method 1: Boot Camp

      Boot Camp let older Intel Macs install Windows on a separate partition. On that setup, CATIA ran on Windows at native speed.

      That path is closed. Apple moved its entire Mac line to Apple Silicon, and Boot Camp does not exist on the M1, M2, M3, M4, or M5 chips. If your Mac was bought in the last few years, it runs Apple Silicon, and Boot Camp is not available to you.

      Even on a remaining Intel Mac, Boot Camp is a dead end for a team. Those machines are out of production, outside Dassault’s current certification cycle, and near the end of their service life. Building a CATIA workflow on them is not a plan for 2026.

      Method 2: Parallels or UTM

      Virtualization tools such as Parallels and UTM run Windows inside macOS. On Apple Silicon, they run Windows 11 on ARM and use emulation to run x86 applications like CATIA. This is where the problems begin.

      Dassault does not certify CATIA on Mac virtualization. It is not on the certified configuration list, so a setup like this is unsupported. If you hit a graphics fault or a crash, you are on your own.

      The community experience reflects this. On Dassault’s own user forum, an engineer running CATIA V5 on an M1 Mac through Parallels reports the program crashing on launch. Accounts of running it through UTM describe performance that is not workable for real design.

      There are deeper reasons. Virtualization on a Mac does not give CATIA a certified professional GPU. It leans on the Mac’s integrated graphics through an emulation layer, which is not built for OpenGL-heavy CAD. There is also no central IT management, so every user maintains their own Windows install, updates, and license.

      Virtualization can be fine for opening a file or testing a light part. It is not a foundation for production CATIA work, and it is not supported.

      Method 3: The Browser-Based 3DEXPERIENCE Apps

      3DEXPERIENCE CATIA is Dassault’s cloud-connected platform, and CATIA V5 users can extend their work onto it. The current 2026 release, R2026x, is delivered as a continuously updated cloud service.

      On a Mac, the browser gives you the platform’s review, markup, and collaboration apps. You can open a model, review it, and coordinate with your team. What you cannot do in the browser is full parametric 3D design. The design applications still install on Windows only.

      In practice, the browser apps work best for collaboration and model review, while full CATIA design work still requires a Windows-based installation.
