Using a Mac does not always mean leaving Windows behind. Many businesses still rely on Windows applications for accounting, reporting, analytics, ERP, engineering, and other day-to-day operations.
Mac users generally have two practical options to run these applications. They can run Windows locally through Parallels Desktop or access a cloud-hosted Windows desktop through VDI.
Both approaches allow Mac users to access Windows applications, but they differ significantly in how they perform, scale, and are managed. Understanding Parallels Desktop and Cloud VDI
Parallels Desktop is virtualization software that runs Windows inside macOS. It creates a virtual machine that uses part of the Mac’s processor, memory, storage, and graphics resources.
Windows and macOS run at the same time, allowing users to move between applications without restarting the device. Parallels Coherence Mode can also display supported Windows applications alongside native Mac applications.
The platform supports shared folders, clipboard synchronization, USB access, drag-and-drop file transfers, shared printers, and dynamic display resolution. This makes it convenient for users who regularly move between Windows and macOS workflows.
Cloud VDI works differently. Windows runs on remote servers hosted in a provider’s data center rather than on the Mac itself. The Mac displays the remote desktop while the hosted server handles the operating system, applications, storage, and processing.
Users normally connect through a desktop client or web browser. Cloud VDI can be delivered through Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, VMware-based platforms, or a managed Desktop as a Service provider.
The experience depends on the infrastructure, network, configuration, desktop-delivery technology, and level of management provided.

1. Windows Compatibility on Apple Silicon Macs
Modern Macs use Apple silicon processors based on the Arm architecture. As a result, Parallels Desktop runs the ARM edition of Windows 11 on these devices rather than the traditional x64 version used on most Intel and AMD systems.
Microsoft identifies Parallels Desktop as an authorized solution for running Windows 11 Pro and Windows 11 Enterprise ARM editions on supported Apple silicon Macs.
Microsoft also presents Windows 365 as another way to access Windows from a Mac, although Windows 365 streams the operating system from the cloud instead of running it locally.
Apple’s Boot Camp Assistant does not support Windows installation on Apple silicon Macs. It remains available only on supported Intel-based models.
Windows 11 on Arm can run Arm64 applications and many x86 and x64 applications through emulation. However, this does not guarantee complete compatibility.
Microsoft explains that emulation supports user-mode application code but does not emulate x86 or x64 drivers. Applications that depend on older drivers, USB license keys, printer drivers, security tools, database components, or kernel-level software may not work correctly.
This makes testing essential. Businesses should verify the complete workflow, including the main application, plugins, peripherals, integrations, drivers, and security software.
2. Setup and Ease of Use
Parallels Desktop is usually simpler for an individual user. The user installs Parallels, creates a Windows virtual machine, assigns the required resources, installs the applications, and activates Windows.
Windows is not included with a Parallels Desktop purchase. A separate Windows license is required. Once configured, users can operate Windows and macOS together without restarting the Mac.
Cloud VDI requires more preparation because the desktop environment must be provisioned, secured, and managed remotely. Administrators may need to configure identity, networking, storage, applications, access policies, user profiles, monitoring, and backups.
A managed Cloud VDI provider can handle much of this work. This makes the model easier to adopt for businesses without dedicated VDI expertise.
For one user who wants quick access to Windows, Parallels is usually simpler. For a business that needs standardized desktops across multiple employees, Cloud VDI provides a more structured approach.
3. Application Compatibility
Application compatibility is one of the most important differences between the two options. Parallels can work well for modern applications that support Windows 11 Arm or operate correctly through Microsoft’s x86 and x64 emulation.
However, businesses should not assume that every Windows application will function properly. Problems may occur when software depends on specialized drivers, older database engines, security agents, peripherals, plugins, or vendor-specific hardware.
Cloud VDI can provide a conventional x64 Windows environment running on Intel or AMD infrastructure. This often makes it a better fit for traditional Windows applications and older business software.
Cloud VDI does not guarantee universal compatibility either. Some applications may have restrictions related to virtualization, multi-user access, licensing, graphics, or device redirection.
Parallels Desktop is generally more suitable when the required software is confirmed to work on Windows 11 Arm. Cloud VDI is usually safer for legacy x64 applications and complex business environments.
4. Performance and Resource Usage
Parallels runs Windows locally, so performance depends on the Mac’s hardware. The Windows virtual machine and macOS share the available processor, memory, storage, and graphics resources. Assigning more resources to Windows may improve its performance but can leave fewer resources for Mac applications.
A well-configured Mac can provide responsive performance for compatible productivity applications and moderate workloads. However, performance remains limited by the physical Mac.
Cloud VDI moves most processing to remote infrastructure. This allows a modest Mac to access a virtual desktop configured with additional CPU, RAM, storage, or GPU resources.
This can be useful for larger accounting databases, ERP systems, CAD applications, financial models, business intelligence platforms, software development, and graphics-intensive workloads.
The network remains an important factor. Latency, bandwidth, packet loss, data center location, storage speed, and the desktop-delivery protocol all influence the user experience. Parallels is often better for local workloads on a capable Mac. Cloud VDI is more suitable when workloads require flexible or higher computing resources.
5. Offline Access and Internet Dependency
Parallels has a clear advantage when users need to work without continuous internet access. Once Windows and the required applications are installed locally, many programs can operate offline. Online activation, cloud storage, remote databases, and collaboration features may still require connectivity.
Cloud VDI normally requires an active network connection because the Windows environment runs remotely. An unreliable network can lead to delayed input, reduced image quality, slow responses, audio interruptions, or disconnected sessions.
Modern VDI platforms can adapt to changing network conditions, but they cannot remove the need for connectivity. Users who frequently work offline may prefer Parallels. Users with dependable connectivity can benefit from the centralized access offered by Cloud VDI.
6. Security and Data Protection
Parallels stores the Windows virtual machine on the Mac unless another storage arrangement is used.
This means Windows data may exist inside the virtual machine, in shared Mac folders, on external drives, or in connected cloud storage. The organization must therefore secure both macOS and Windows.
This should include full-disk encryption, multifactor authentication, endpoint protection, operating system updates, access controls, device management, backup, and remote lock or wipe capabilities.
Features such as shared folders, clipboard access, USB devices, printing, and file transfers should also be governed when users handle confidential information.
Cloud VDI allows businesses to keep primary applications and data inside a centrally managed environment. Administrators can control file downloads, clipboard access, printing, USB use, drive redirection, application access, and session policies.
However, it is not accurate to say that Cloud VDI automatically keeps all data away from the endpoint. Users may still download files, copy information, take screenshots, print documents, or retain active sessions unless these actions are restricted.
Cloud VDI reduces local data exposure when it is supported by strong identity controls, endpoint protection, monitoring, and policy enforcement. The need for stronger data protection continues to grow. IBM reported that the global average cost of a data breach reached $4.99 million in 2026, representing a 12% annual increase. Verizon’s 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report found that 48% of the breaches studied involved ransomware.
These figures do not mean that Cloud VDI prevents cyberattacks. They highlight the importance of centralized patching, monitoring, access controls, backups, and endpoint security under either model.
7. Remote Access and Device Flexibility
A Parallels virtual machine is mainly associated with the Mac on which it is installed. Remote-access software can be added, but the Mac generally needs to remain powered on, connected, available, and secure.
Cloud VDI is designed for users who move between devices and locations. Employees can connect to the same Windows environment from an approved MacBook, Windows PC, tablet, thin client, or supported browser.
Applications, files, and settings remain associated with the hosted desktop rather than one physical computer. This makes Cloud VDI useful for remote employees, contractors, traveling professionals, seasonal workers, distributed offices, and bring-your-own-device programs.
Parallels is usually sufficient for someone who primarily works from one Mac. Cloud VDI offers greater flexibility for users who need access from different locations or devices.
8. IT Management and Administration
Parallels is manageable when only a small number of people need Windows. As deployment grows, IT teams may need to maintain separate virtual machines, Windows updates, security tools, application installations, backups, and configurations across multiple Macs.
Parallels Business and Enterprise editions offer centralized licensing and deployment features, but the virtual machines continue to run on individual endpoints.
Cloud VDI centralizes desktop management. IT teams can use standardized desktop images and manage application deployment, access permissions, updates, user profiles, security settings, monitoring, backup, and recovery from one environment.
This can simplify employee onboarding and offboarding. Access can be provisioned or revoked without depending entirely on the recovery of a physical device.
Cloud VDI still requires expertise in identity, infrastructure, networking, storage, security, and application delivery. A managed service provider can handle these responsibilities for organizations that lack internal resources.
9. Scalability
Parallels are limited by the hardware installed on each Mac. When a user needs more memory, storage, or graphics capacity, the business may need to replace the device. Most current Mac configurations cannot be internally upgraded after purchase.
Cloud VDI resources can be adjusted within the hosted infrastructure. Administrators can increase virtual CPU, memory, storage, or GPU capacity and add or remove desktops as requirements change.
Virtual Desktop also supports scaling plans that can start or stop session hosts based on schedules and demand. This flexibility is useful for seasonal teams, temporary projects, rapid hiring, and workloads that change throughout the year.
Parallels works well for stable individual requirements. Cloud VDI is better suited to growing teams and fluctuating resource demands.
10. Cost and Total Cost of Ownership
The two solutions use different pricing models, so comparing their license prices alone can be misleading. A Parallels deployment may involve the Parallels license, a Windows license, Mac hardware, endpoint protection, backup, device management, storage, and IT support. For an individual who already owns a capable Mac, the direct software cost may be relatively low.
Windows 365 uses a fixed monthly pricing model based on the selected processor, memory, storage, and edition. This provides predictable per-user costs but may also require additional Microsoft subscriptions for productivity, identity, management, or security features.
Virtual Desktop uses a consumption-based infrastructure model rather than one fixed per-user price. Microsoft separates AVD costs into user access rights and Azure infrastructure consumption. Eligible Microsoft or Windows licenses may include user access rights, while organizations still pay for virtual machines, storage, networking, monitoring, and related services.
The final cost depends on the virtual machine type, region, operating hours, number of users, storage, GPU needs, existing licensing, backup, monitoring, and support. A fair comparison should therefore evaluate total cost of ownership, not just the annual or monthly subscription price.
Parallels Desktop or Cloud VDI: Which One to Choose?
Parallels Desktop and Cloud VDI both make Windows accessible on a Mac, but the better choice depends on how the environment will be used.
Parallels Desktop is a practical option when Windows access is limited to a single Mac or a small number of users. Cloud VDI becomes more relevant when Windows access needs to be delivered as part of a broader business environment with centralized administration and room to grow.
The decision should ultimately be based on application requirements, user needs, IT resources, and how much control the business wants over its Windows environment.
For organizations planning beyond individual desktop use, Cloud VDI generally provides a more structured approach to delivering Windows across teams.
