Error-QuickBooks Files Can not be Opened Directly

Step 1: There are two ways to start the restore process. The first is when you start your QuickBooks application, on the “Welcome to QuickBooks” screen, select the option – “open an existing company file”.

Step 2: In the “Open Company: Type” window, select the second option which is “Restore a backup copy (.QBB)”.

Step 3: If, on the other hand, you already have a QuickBooks data file open, the second method is to click on the “File” option from the top menu bar, and then choose “Open or Restore Company”.

Step 4: You next need to specify whether your backup file is stored locally or online. Unless you have subscribed to Intuit’s Quickbooks Online Backup service, select “Local backup” and then click on “Next”.

Step 5: In the next step, you will need to locate the backup file that you want to restore. Browse to your preferred backup folder, and select the backup file which you want to restore.

Step 6: Once you have selected the backup file to restore, specify where you want to save the restored data file on your computer.

Step 7: Click on the “Next” button and navigate to the location on your computer where you want to save your data file.

Caution: It’s best not to restore to the same location as your original file, or if you need to, try not to overwrite the existing data file. You could either rename the original data file or save the restored file using a different name.

Step 8: Quickbooks restores the backup file and once it is restored, it successfully opens the company file.

Note – Your backup file is not deleted. Also keep in mind which data file you are working on.
