Why Companies Need AWS Backup in 2024

How to ensure Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery?

Data Protection

If your company were to lose its data today, how much time would it take to resume business as usual (BAU)?

If your heart skips a beat while reading this question and your palms get sweaty, AWS Backup (and this blog) is for you. In today’s world, data is growing exponentially and is a valuable asset to any organization. This data is being used to drive LLMs (large language models), generative AI, and machine learning. And that data needs to be protected.

However, designing, architecting, and deploying a data protection solution is a journey and a challenge. But first, let’s define what “Data Protection” is. Data Protection is the process of safeguarding important data from corruption, compromise, or loss and providing the capability to restore that data to a functional state to maintain BAU (business-as-usual).

What is AWS Backup?

AWS Backup is a fully managed service that centralizes and automates data protection across multiple AWS services and hybrid workloads with data protection compliance analytics and insights. It is also a cost-effective, policy-driven service with features that simplify data management at scale.

Currently, AWS Backup supports 19 AWS services, such as Amazon S3, Amazon Dynamo DB, Amazon FSx, Amazon EC2, Amazon EFS, Amazon Aurora, etc. So, instead of going to 19 different consoles, use 19 sets of APIs and 19 sets of scripts; you have one place where you can create retention policies and a backup plan for all your resources.

Use Cases for AWS Backup

  • Cloud Native Backups: Using cloud-native backups, you can simplify the management of your data protection across multiple AWS services.
  • Compliance and Governance: Regarding compliance and governance, AWS Backup works alongside the AWS Backup Audit Manager to audit and report on the data protection policies to help meet your business regulations.
  • Disaster Recovery: Studies show that 90% of business that do not recover fully from downtime in 30 days never return. You must have backups that you can rely on to do restores. AWS Backup has multiple features, such as Vault Lock, that ensure that your backups are immutable and cannot be deleted.

AWS Backup – New Capabilities

At AWS re:Invent 2023, AWS added multiple new features to the already amazing AWS Backup. Here are a few of those:

New Console Experience: To gain better visibility on the ‘Backup and Restore Jobs,’ the new AWS Backup Jobs dashboard can view all your backup jobs in your environment in one place. The jobs dashboard will also now point out backups that have been failing so that you can see trouble areas and respond accordingly.

Restore Testing: If you did a backup and cannot restore it, did you make a backup? The best way to ensure your backups are restorable is to test the restores. This is usually a painful manual process; however, with the new Restore Testing features of AWS Backup, the backups can be tested using your custom-defined playbooks of what to restore.

Support for Amazon EBS Snapshots Archive: Most customers need to take a backup of all EBS snapshots and usually keep them for 5 to 7 years. This is a huge cost for many customers. With the new AWS Backup feature of Amazon EBS Snapshot Archive you now have a way to take snapshots that are needed for a long time and keep them in a cold storage. This ensures you reduce the amount you spend while keeping those snapshots.

Conclusions

In a data-driven world, protecting your most valuable asset is no longer optional. As of September 2023, over 130k customers use AWS Backup to protect over 18. Exabytes of their application data on AWS. These include companies like Flipkart, Bharti Airtel, and Axis Bank, to name a few.

AWS backup is a reliable, cost-effective, enterprise-grade solution for businesses of all sizes to protect their data and ensure business continuity with data recovery.
